Show Notes

Retirement planning isn't just about filling out paperwork—it's about making informed decisions well before your retirement date arrives.

In this episode of Rayna Retirement, Rayna Reyes explains why federal employees should begin planning for retirement months—or even years—ahead of time, even though many agencies won't allow retirement applications to be submitted until you're within a specific window. She discusses why early preparation reduces stress, helps avoid costly mistakes, and gives you time to make important decisions with confidence.

Rayna also addresses a common misconception that retirement planning can wait until the application window opens. Instead, she explains why the planning process should happen first, leaving the final paperwork as simply the last step.

Reyna Reyes has dedicated her career to helping people make small, smarter financial decisions. Reina retirement is all about breaking down complex financial concepts into language you can actually understand. Now here's the co founder of American Federal Benefits Consultants, Reyna Reyes. [00:00:40] Speaker B: All right, federal employees, if you're worried or wondering about when you should submit your AURA application or your documents for retirement, you got to remember that time is on your side. Yes, it is, because some of these human resources agencies are not even welcoming you into the portal until you're within 60 days of your retirement window. How many days is that? 60? How many months is that? Barely two. And I have people reaching out to me. They're like, I'm retiring in 2027. I need to start talking to you. Yes, we need to get scheduled. Let's do that. And then I'm telling them, hey, we're going to talk again. Because they're not even giving you access. They're like, what? That's not, that's not close enough. That's unbelievable. I need more time than that. Well, yes, you need time to plan, time to simulate, time to structure, time to decide. They don't need to give you so much time to plug and chug to then declare what those decisions were. For example, what are some of these decisions that you're making? Obviously survivor benefits, what am I doing? My life insurance, what am I doing, My health insurance, dental, vision, all kinds of things. But once those decisions have been made, as one of my math teachers in college or high school used to say, then from then on it's just plug and chug, right? Once you know the formula, you just insert numbers, go do the math, and that's all you have to do once you actually have access to the AURA application. My the issue many people are coming up with now or facing now is that they've waited to schedule with us until that 60 day window, assuming we're going to have availability in the next couple of days. And as you can imagine, there's a lot of employees looking for this kind of information and not a ton of specialists. Now believe me, they're coming out of the woodwork, but I have people coming to me after they speak with other specialists and we're having to maybe Correct some things or, you know, kind of just tweak the plan. You know, there's a small hitch in the giddy up or they've been told something that's just blatantly incorrect. Now let me give something. Let me give the benefit of the doubt for everyone. Do we all hear things differently than maybe they were said? Sure, I can chalk some of that up to maybe just a mistake or a misunderstanding or being misheard. However, there's also things that I know that some people are being told that just may not be 100% correct. So your source of information is a big factor, but also we need a little benefit of the doubt because somebody's like, I can't believe you can't talk to me tomorrow. I can't believe you can't talk to me next week. Okay, well, you know, we also have schedules to work with and all those things. So it would be good. Remember to start planning, get on the calendar, go ahead and reach out and at least be booked. That way you are already reserved your spot and your guarantee of a conversation with myself or one of the specialists on the team. The benefit of that is that you do all the formula stuff, the decisions, the planning, the extra math before you're ready to plug and chug. Because then the plug and chug time, when you actually have access into the Aura application or the grb, transition into the Aura application. Once you have that, then it's just, okay, we're filling in the blanks. We know exactly what we're doing here. There's. There is no surprise. We're simply relaying the information to human resources so they can retire you out of there. So the goal of this is to calm your spirit, reminding you that time is on your side in that manner. Now, you want to combat time by getting scheduled with us sooner than later, for sure. But I want to calm your heart that all will be well, that once those decisions are made, the rest will be very simple and we don't need to give them crazy amounts of lead time. In fact, they're not allowing us to give them crazy amounts of lead time. They only want within that short time period. Some, a couple of months, some are saying 6 months, 4, 3, 2. Usually it's 2 is the minimum 60 days for that to submit for their retirement. So get scheduled, get prepped, help us, help us help you. And that way your spirit will be very calm going into retirement because it does not have to be a stressful time. You are segueing into the time of your life that is supposed to be golden and enjoyable so you can experience the fruits of your labor. Let us help you do that the right way the first time. Reach out. Let's get scheduled and we'll talk to you soon.
